Kal Alston

Kal Alston was named Senior Vice President for Human Capital Development in 2011, after serving as Senior Associate Provost for Academic Administration and co-leading the human resources functions at the University. She has been a Professor in Cultural Foundations of Education and Women’s and Gender Studies since joining the University in 2005.

As Senior Vice President, Alston is responsible for major initiatives and projects related to inclusion, diversity, access, opportunity, and development of human capital across all divisions of the University, as well as in the University’s civic and community engagement initiatives. In addition to Human Resources, Alston oversees the offices of Academic Human Resources, and Equal Opportunity, Inclusion and Resolution Services. She is invested in helping academic units leverage fiscal, material and human resources to create fruitful collaborations, inside and outside the University. Alston serves as a senior advisor to the Provost regarding faculty life cycle and development.

Alston received her A.B. from Dartmouth College and her Ph.D. in philosophy of education from University of Chicago. She came to Syracuse University from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she served on the faculty for 16 years, the last five as Director of Gender and Women’s Studies. Her experience inside and outside of the academy ranges from undergraduate admission at Dartmouth to managing litigation research and support at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, to serving as vice-chair of the Champaign County Public Housing Authority. Her research and teaching has been in philosophy of education, popular culture and romance, the rise of youth and celebrity culture, education policy, and race and gender in the production of the professions. She was an ACE Fellow in 2003-04 and is a Fellow of the Philosophy of Education Society.
