Daryl J. Gross

Daryl J. GrossDirector of Athletics

Daryl Gross assumed his current position in February 2005 and is responsible for overseeing, managing and directing all aspects of the Department of Athletics and the Carrier Dome. These responsibilities include management of all personnel, operational, facility, fiscal and policy matters for a program that conducts 21 varsity sports involving more than 600 student-athletes.

His vision to ensure that Syracuse, year in and year out, is recognized as one of the great athletic institutions in the country is what drives Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. His mission for SU Athletics is to compete and perform at the highest level in everything - on the playing field, in the classroom, with facilities, and in the community. The principles he believes in include winning championships, graduating all of the student-athletes, maintaining compliance to all NCAA rules and being fiscally sound.

In addition to his day-to-day duties as the Director of Athletics managing the department, Dr. Gross works directly with football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball and tennis, as well as other sport programs directly and indirectly.

Prior to assuming the duties of his present position, Dr. Gross spent 14 years in athletic administration at the University of Southern California. The Trojans won 16 national and more than 30 Pac-10 championships, fielded 145 Olympians, and finished almost every year in the top 10 of the Sears Directors' Cup all-sports rankings. In the last three seasons, while Dr. Gross was a member of the USC administration, the university's signature program, football, dressed two Heisman Trophy winners and won two national championships.

Dr. Gross holds both a master's degree and Ph.D. in educational psychology from USC, as well as a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of California at Davis, where he was a football wide receiver from 1979 to 1981.
