About this Program

  • Learn the fundamentals of good communication—writing, graphic design, interactive communication and oral presentation.
  • Take part in the many facets of producing campaign materials, brochures, newsletters and press releases, and then take on event planning and news conferences as you build a foundation for your chosen career.
  • Learn from faculty with both practical and academic experience who know what it’s like to manage a corporate crisis, create a nonprofit campaign and build bridges between governments and citizens.
  • Immerse yourself during your senior year in top-level PR operations in New York City during a faculty-sponsored visit.
  • Meet with major industry players for advice and insight on portfolio building and employment opportunities.
  • Join Hill Communications—Syracuse University’s student-run PR firm that is affiliated with the Public Relations Student Society of America—and provides communications services for a diverse group of clients.
  • Participate in one or many of the 18 student-run campus publications and collaborate with students from other majors as you complete projects for public relations and advertising campaigns.
  • Explore careers as a public relations manager/director, director of corporate communications, event planner, director of community relations, account coordinator/executive/manager, and marketing communications manager.

Curriculum

In the Newhouse School’s public relations program, you will build strong writing and presentation skills and learn the principles and processes behind effective communications management. By the time you graduate, you’ll be equipped with the technical and management skills you need to break into the PR field and advance in the professional arena. Take courses like Advertising and Public Relations Law, Ethics of Advocacy, Public Relations Campaign Planning and Execution, Public Relations Principles and Concepts, Public Relations Research, and Writing for News and Public Relations in a Digital Age.
